Jessie on a Journey
A shirtless elderly man with a weathered and tan complexion is seated on the ground. He is wearing a traditional beige sarong wrapped around his waist. His legs are stretched out in front of him, and he is leaning forward, intently focused on carving a piece of volcanic rock with a chisel-like tool in his hands. Around him are various sculpting tools and a few small, sculpted pieces crafted from the volcanic rock. The scene is set against a textured, sandy-colored stone wall, indicating an outdoor or rustic setting.

Volcanic Rock Sculptor's Home Studio Visit

Have you ever gotten to go into a local home while traveling? Where? ___ In San Juan de Oriente, a predominantly indigenous community in Nicaragua’s Masaya Department, I had the pleasure of going to the home of a local man who turns volcanic rock into mesmerizing sculptures. He’s actually the only sculptor in the community, as most of the local artisans focus on ceramics. It was fascinating watching him chisel away on the rock, which he often carries (in a larger form) on his back for four to five hours from the lagoon where he sources it. I even bought a pestle and mortar for only $2! ___ A big thanks to @lamariposanicaragua, my Spanish school and eco-hotel for eight days, for bringing me here!
