Exploring Carlisle Castle's Rich History
Carlisle is touted as "the most besieged city in the UK", so of course, I had to visit the Carlisle Castle during my trip there.
🏰
Construction of Carlisle Castle began in 1093 on the site of a Roman fort. In 1112, it was rebuilt using stone, featuring a keep, gates and city walls.
💪
Today you can explore the grounds and wander the buildings, learning about the site's fascinating history along the way. A few points of interest that caught my attention:
🏰
The views from the top. You can walk around the entire perimeter.
🏰
The "doodles" carved into the walls inside the upper level of the keep, thought to be done by bored guards. You can view a reference guide for the symbols to get a sense of the stories being told.
🏰
The licking stones inside the prison. Apparently, thirsty Jacobite prisoners would lick the walls to try to hydrate -- before being executed on Gallows Hill. Onsite, you can also visit Cumbria's Museum of Military Life.
