Behind the Shoot:
Our client, a vibrant and dynamic hairdresser specializing in hair extensions and braids, wanted to rebrand her image with photos that scream personality and authority. She’s a true powerhouse in her salon, and we set out to capture her essence both in her professional environment and outdoors with her stunning Audi. This wasn’t just about taking pictures; it was about telling her story through visuals that resonate with her brand identity.
Mastering Low Light Photography
Indoors, the challenge was working with low light to create a moody, yet vibrant atmosphere that highlighted her skills and personality. Utilizing the Profoto A2 and the magnetic click Octa softbox, I brought the scene to life, balancing the ambient light with carefully placed flash to add depth and drama. This setup allowed me to maintain the integrity of the low-light environment while ensuring that every detail—from the intricate braids to the glint in her eyes—was captured with stunning clarity.
Outdoor Magic with Flash Photography
Moving outdoors, the golden hour provided a perfect backdrop, but the real magic happened when I introduced flash into the mix. The goal was to not just capture the natural light but to enhance it, creating an almost cinematic feel with the sunset and the car. By placing a flash inside the car, I added a pop of pink that not only matched her brand’s color palette but also created a striking contrast against the natural light, making the photos look larger than life.
With my trusty 135mm lens, I captured sweeping, epic shots that made the whole scene feel like it belonged in a high-end fashion magazine. The results? Breathtaking images that perfectly blend natural and artificial light, creating a series of photos that are both vibrant and dynamic.
The Editing Process:
The editing process was just as crucial as the shoot itself. Working with high ISOs in low light pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it also opened up new creative possibilities. I used Adobe’s Denoise to clean up the noise without losing the rich details in her hair and skin. Balancing exposure between her face and the background, pulling down highlights, and enhancing the sky with Lightroom’s masking tools were just a few of the steps that transformed these images from great to extraordinary. Then it's portrait retouching in Evoto.
Lessons Learned:
This shoot was not only about creating beautiful images but also about learning and growing as a photographer. There were moments of trial and error, like when I realized I could have used an additional light to rim light the car. These insights are invaluable, and I share all of them in Photo Insiders, where you can see the entire shoot, including camera settings, lighting setups, and editing techniques.
