Why I Don’t Use the Canon RF 50mm Lens for Weddings Anymore
When it comes to wedding photography, choosing the right lens is crucial. The best lens for wedding photography is often debated, and while the previous lens reviews showed that my Canon RF 50mm 1.2 was once my go-to, I’ve made a shift in my lens choices. Here's review on why I do love the Canon RF 50mm lens and think it's awesome, but why it no longer fits my needs for wedding photography.
The Canon RF50mm f1.2 lens was my favorite for many reasons. Its wide aperture allowed for stunning bokeh, making it one of the best lenses for portrait photography. This lens offered incredible versatility, enabling me to capture individuals, couples, and groups with beautiful clarity and depth. I often recommended the Canon 50mm as the best lens for photography enthusiasts, especially for those who wanted to master portrait and wedding photography.
Why I don't bring the Canon RF 50mm lens on my wedding gigs:
Versatility and Focal Length Limitations:
While the Canon RF 50mm f1.2 L USM lens provides excellent image quality, I found that it lacked the versatility needed for dynamic wedding environments. Weddings often require a mix of close-up portraits and wide-angle shots. A single focal length can be limiting when trying to capture the full scope of the event. In this video, I'll explain why the 50mm lens is no longer my favorite for weddings and portrait photography. Discover the best Canon lens for wedding photography and why the nifty fifty lens may not be the best choice for every situation!
Focus Speed and Accuracy:
Fast and accurate focus is essential in wedding photography, where moments are fleeting. Although the Canon RF 50mm 1.2 has impressive autofocus capabilities, I needed a lens that could adapt quickly to changing scenes and lighting conditions. Other lenses in the RF lineup offered faster and more reliable performance.
Weight and Portability:
The Canon RF 50mm 1.2 lens, while robust and high-quality, is relatively heavy. During long wedding shoots, carrying lighter lenses like the RF 35mm or RF 85mm reduced fatigue and allowed for greater maneuverability.
Alternative Lenses for Weddings:
Exploring other options, I found lenses like the Canon RF 28-70mm 2.0 L more suitable for wedding photography. These lenses offered a wider range of focal lengths, better low-light performance, and superior versatility. They have become my go-to choices for capturing the essence of weddings.
Best Lenses for Wedding Photography:
While the Canon RF 50mm lens remains a fantastic choice for portrait photography and certain wedding scenarios, it’s no longer my top pick for the entirety of a wedding day. The best lens for wedding photography combines versatility, speed, and ease of use. For those just starting, the Canon RF 50mm 1.8 is still an excellent lens. However, for seasoned professionals seeking the best Canon lenses for weddings, exploring other options might yield better results.
