Trevor Noah's Memoir: Born Under Apartheid

Don’t keep scrolling! You need to know about this book. You can even pretend it isn’t Trevor Noah if that makes you feel better. But it’s so important. As a biracial child born under Apartheid, he was illegal. He had to hide. He couldn’t play with the white kids or the black kids; his German dad couldn’t be seen with him in public; his African mom had to hire a light skinned woman to pretend to be his mom in public. This book about South Africa is the perspective on racism that we Americans needs - to see it with fresh eyes away from our own history and emotions. Listen to the audio if you can - Amazon for the win! Hear him switch seamlessly between the eight languages he speaks. This is a culture and history lesson we all need. So good. “People love to say, “Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.” What they don’t say is, “And it would be nice if you gave him a fishing rod.” That’s the part of the analogy that’s missing.” 📕Trevor Noah; Born a Crime @spiegelandgrau Of note, this is not a clean book. He doesn’t cuss horribly, but definitely makes use of them as needed.
