Significance of Hanukkah for Christians
Hanukkah. If it was important to Jesus, maybe we should pay more attention to it too? It was never something I sure never talked about. Never studied. Meant nothing to me really until this year.
.
It’s in your Bible. Jesus celebrated Hanukkah and was at the temple - but unless you know it’s the same thing as the “Festival of Dedication”, you won’t find it. Right there. John 10:22.
.
It’s in your history. It’s on that blank page in your Bible between the Old and New Testament. Those silent 400 years weren’t that silent after all.
.
Only 200 years before Jesus, the Jews revolted against their Greek leaders when they told them to worship their gods in the Jewish temple. The Maccabees revolted. They fought. And they won.
.
The Jewish people cleaned and rededicated their temple. Relit their lights but only had enough oil for one day. The miracle of oil lasted for eight. Thus the special 8 pronged menorah for Hanukkah - the 8 night Festival of Lights.
.
But that’s not my history, right? I’m Christian. We’ve moved on. True… but since Judaism is our religious foundation, where would Jesus have been if they hadn’t triumphed over the Greeks? If the Jews had been wiped out? Judaism gone? Where’s your Christianity then? Hard to have Jesus if his people weren’t victorious.
.
This was just our toe-dip in. We know enough to appreciate the meaning behind the songs we would have otherwise missed or to pick out the menorah at the library. It’s just a peg to hang the next layer of knowledge.
.
Here’s some books to add to your list for next year! I’d love to hear if you celebrated this year - I definitely need some guidance ❤️

If you turn the sound on, you’ll hear my kids arguing. Just keepin it real 😂
