Let Kids Read What They Enjoy

I’m annoyed. Here’s why. 👇👇 Because ten years ago (when I first started the homeschool life), I was told that if my kids weren’t reading “the best books”, that they were wasting time. Twaddle if you will. Thanks, Charlotte Mason. So I didn’t really buy the “fun” books. I stuck to the classic children’s picture books mostly. And wasted so much money and time… 😮‍💨 (Have I mentioned lately that Love You Forever is a creepy book?! 😳 But now this fourth kid has devoured a kid book series about zombies… And he’s excited about his books and carries them everywhere. (Unlike those zombies. Ba dum ching! 🧟 As a rebellious classical homeschool mom 🙋‍♀️ I’m also declaring that sometimes old “classic books” are just boring. Or pointless ramblings for 500-900 pages. Just because a book is old and somebody decided 200 years that it was worth reading (or paid them for lots of worthless words!) … That this doesn’t mean it is worth my time. No, I’m not advocating reading trash. But I’ll never get back the three months I spent reading Whom the Bells Tolls for book club (I love you @the_book_lady_and_jesus and group). But I could have read six fun books in that amount of time. “Obscenity!” With that said. Let your kid read about zombies if that’s what it takes for them to find some favorites. Or princesses. Or mysteries. Let them learn to love reading. When they are teenagers, they will “have” to read certain books. And won’t “have time” for the fun stuff they used to enjoy. My rebel homeschool teen is currently feeling sneaky while reading The Book Thief instead of her Classical Conversations homeschool work. How dare she make time for books she enjoys! 😏 Signed, Your humble trouble making homeschooler who is just sitting back waiting for the trolls If you want some books your kid will love, comment ZOMBIES and I’ll send the link over. 😉 But if you’re living the homeschool life and figuring out which rules to break… 👋Welcome.
