Hands-on Museum Experience: Learning About Native American Bison Traditions

Just some kids reassembling bison ribs and liver… 😂 Such a fun way to remember how all the animal parts were used by Native Americans. (See the mountain of bison skulls in the last picture from all that were killed by white men - that amazed my boy!) . . The Museum of the Great Plains in Lawton, Oklahoma is a small town museum that we just discovered for the first time. And it’s all I’ve heard about today because they want to go back. It’s only an hour away! . . If you’re in the Red River area and haven’t discovered this hands-on museum, you’re missing out on a full day of play and learning. For the grown ups who need to sit, go watch a documentary in the auditorium while the big kids build ramps and create upstairs. Let them play grocery store in the giant general store. Make your own flyer at the printing press or tool your own leather in the saddle shop. So much to do - we could have stayed all day! . . Here’s to museum docents who know how to get kids excited to explore museums!
