Hands-On Math Lesson with Beans

Math talk #1 at morning time today. I think it was a success... Hope so? I’ve been reading a lot about developing a math mindset and not just learning the algorithms to solve endless equations. This is the goal for the summer. It makes so much sense and so overlooked! . . We looked at the bag of mixed beans and talked about estimating. And let them ask questions. How many cups are in the bag? What is we count a 1/16 cup and multiply it? What if we lay them out and count down and across and multiply? So they each had 1/8 cup, counted, figured out each total, came back and averaged each persons’ count... . . Maybe tomorrow I’ll actually get one of them to count 2000+ beans ;) After we come up with ways to classify them or weigh them or whatever else I can come up with... I know they won’t be eaten! Any ideas? #hereisourhomeschool @intentionalhomeschooling
