Exploring Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone
Taking on #yellowstone for day 3 meant #mammothhotsprings which is actually quite cool. I have officially become my mother and read from a fact book to my husband while driving! Greg affirms this ;). So here's your geology lesson which I think is fascinating... These springs come through limestone which is soft and can't form geysers (which are in hard volcanic stone) so it bubbles up and flows. When it comes up, it brings calcium carbonate which deposits and forms the terraces. Which is the same thing that causes stalactites in wet caves! This is called travertine- like rich people marble. And if it remains dormant, soil deposits, trees grow, and it blends in. May you have been more excited about al that than the hubby. I thought it was fascinating ;). And the animals that live nearby these places live shorter lives because of the deposits in the plants. The more you know...
