Reclaiming Wonders
A whimsically illustrated school notebook lies open on a wooden surface, displaying colorful drawings and handwritten text. The first drawing depicts a playful giraffe with long eyelashes and a smiling expression, while the second illustrates an elongated purple creature resembling a roharte, a mythical animal. Underneath, a brief passage titled 'Abyssinian Cat' describes the physical characteristics and hunting habits of this feline breed, accompanied by a simple sketch. Adjacent to the notebook is a green plastic storage container filled with various nature guides, activity books, and colored pencils, suggesting an educational or artistic endeavor centered around wildlife and the natural world.

Embracing Imperfect Nature Study Moments

Too often perfectionistic fears keep me from starting something. What if they don’t like it? What if they only do it for two minutes? Or, most often, what if I only do it once and then forget to continue and then waste supplies or effort... writing them out, I do realize it sound ridiculous. . So, despite frequent nature outings, I had given up on nature study because they never want to draw. Only play. Despite me hauling stuff repeatedly on our outings. . So I pulled out some cheap Target dollar spot notebooks, the bucket of colored pencils, and our favorite wildlife cards. Best Goodwill find ever! . And I told them to pick an animal and draw while we started to do morning time. And they did. And then got another card. And compared the symbols to the biome maps to figure out where their animal was from. And then narrated facts to me for their book. And helped each other find the animals they wanted. And delighted in the animals they found. Nature. Studied. . And it was our level of perfect. For an hour. . My goal is every Tuesday. May the gods of Instagram hold me accountable. ;) . .
