9/11 Children's Book: Towers Falling
“Don’t let trauma and pain keep you from teaching and talking about our history. We owe it to our children so they can be better citizens. It is their America now, and if they know about our darkest hours, they will also be reminded of American resilience, unity, freedom and democracy.” — Jewell Parker Rhodes
Set fifteen years after 9/11, an elementary age kid and her class learn the truth about the twin towers and why their Brooklyn classroom skyline looks different than in earlier pictures. This book also tackles homelessness, Muslim stereotypes, and racial differences in such a sweet, realistic way that there’s a lot more to learn here than just our American history.
This book is a great add to family read aloud. Hand it to your big kids, but it will spark great conversations with your elementary age kids. It was a quick read so not a big time commitment either - I haven’t read to my kids, yet. This was just a grown up middle-grade read so far.
And congratulate me for taking a library book camping and bringing it back in one piece! 😃
