8 Must-Know Travel Tips for Athens, Greece
We need to talk about…Athens!
Specifically: 8 must-know travel tips for your family trip to Athens, Greece! 🇬🇷🏛️✈️
1️⃣Don’t wear bad shoes.
Not only will you be doing tons of walking (up and down hills), but those marble sidewalks can be super slippery.
2️⃣Don’t worry about getting Euros.
A shop keeper even told me that they are legally required to accept credit card. Download one to your phone and tap away!
3️⃣Don’t leave the backpack at home.
Even the Athens locals carry backpacks to get everywhere - maybe because they travel all over the subway? I thought it would make us look too touristy… But Athens is full of tourist and backpacks. 😉
4️⃣Don’t be afraid of the subway.
Get a quick subway ticket at the entrance, and you can be anywhere quickly. It was very straight forward. (And they often have a little museum inside!)
5️⃣Don’t overlook the free places!
I know you want to get the ticket but…
Mars (Areopagus) Hill, markets, churches, below-ground ruins, the National Gardens, archeologists-in-action, and beautiful streets are waiting for wandering.
6️⃣Don’t spend a lot on meals.
Gyros make for an amazing lunch!
7️⃣Don’t overload your Athens trip.
Athens is a great city for wandering; leave some empty time on your schedule. If you just hit the main attractions, you'll miss the lovely small streets with over-hanging bougainvillea.
8️⃣Don't plan to do all day Athens sightseeing.
Plan for a couple of hours right after kunch to hide in your air-conditioned hotel. It may be screaming hot; go hide and come back out for supper and more wandering
