What is a Via Ferrata?

What’s a Via Ferrata?! Via Ferrata is Italian for “iron way” and is a route on a mountain face equipped with steel cables, ladders and other fixed anchors. You’ll make your way across, up and down cliff faces that would otherwise be impossible to climb or only for advanced climbers. You’re attached with a harness and two separate cables with carabeanrs so that you’re never detached from the mountainside. The Ouray Via Ferrata is 1 of only 10 Via Ferrata’s in North America! You can choose from 2 different routes, the Upstream being less difficult and the Downstream being more difficult. You can rent helmets and harnesses at San Juan Mountain Guides in Ouray for $45 pp, or book a tour for $160 per person. We went with just rented equipment and felt completely safe the whole time! Pro tip: don’t forget to bring gloves or buy some at the guide shop for $5! Would you try a Via Ferrata? @visitourayco .
