7 Quick Tips for Adjusting to High Altitude
Did you know it takes three full months to acclimate?!
You prob don’t have 3 months to spare to acclimate so here are some quick, easy things you can do to potentially acclimate better and faster:
* drink lots of water: drink lots of water a few days before and sip regularly throughout the day while there to prevent dehydration
* reduce exercise: don’t go full throttle right away if you can help it. Your heart is going to beat faster than normal just sitting above altitude so you feel your best, do your less strenuous activities at the beginning of your trip
* get enough sleep: this one may be obvious because sleep affects everything but pro tip, try traveling to higher points during the day and sleeping lower at night. Ie: hike in Breckenridge but sleep in Denver, to give your body a better chance to recover
* limit alcohol: try waiting at least 48 hrs after arriving to go hard at happy hour
* increase potassium: potassium loss is common with dehydrating and can cause muscle cramping and fatigue. Try a supplement or eat some bananas, avocados, spinach, yogurt, or kale!
* use sun protection: you get 25% less sun protection just in Denver vs sea level and idk about you but sunburns knock me out!
* eat more : at the end of the day, oxygen is required for all of the energy producing processes in your body (so everything) and you actually need more calories when youre at higher altitude and especially when you’re accimating!
