5 Key Things to Add to Your Photography Contracts
Stop scamming yourself 😬
📌 But first make sure to save this post to reference later.
For years I used a generic photography template (that was designed for portrait shoots not commercial) and I thought it was good enough.
Spoiler: it sucked
😭I would get paid late (sometimes never)
😭Clients would ask for hella revisions
😭And I had no control over my own content.
And the scary thing was, there was nothing I could legally do about it 😭
So to save you the headache, here’s the things you need to be adding to your contracts like yesterday!
1️⃣ Late payments
If they don’t pay on time I charge 1% interest per late day starting 48 hrs after the due date. I’ll also send emails every day to remind them.
Pro tip: if you want to incentivize early payment you can give a small discount!
2️⃣ Revisions
I include up to 2 rounds of revisions for free, but after that I charge an hourly editing fee that needs to be paid prior to resuming work
3️⃣ Usage
I ask my clients where they plan to use the content prior to sending the contract. Then I detail out the specific use case, term length, and anything else so everyone knows what the content can or can’t be used for.
4️⃣ Deposits
For retainers I require the first month’s deposit upon signing.
For one off projects I require 100% of projected production expenses + 50% of creative fee up front before starting work.
The additional 50% + any other approved expenses + usage fees are due upon delivery.
5️⃣ Cancelation
Cancellation wastes everyone’s time so if the client cancels before the shoot date they are responsible for all production expenses paid up to that time + 50% of the creative fee.
Now that you know what to include in your contracts it doesn’t matter unless you have a client to send it to…
