A rock climber wearing a helmet, harness, and safety gear is scaling a towering reddish-brown cliff face against a brilliant blue sky. The climber appears to be pointing or indicating a route upwards on the sheer rock face. The gear and attire suggest this is an experienced rock climber engaging in the adventurous outdoor sport of rock climbing in a scenic, remote location with striking geological formations.

Fight or Flight Instincts

I’m EXHAUSTED TODAY and for good reason. Last night I caught a thief attempting to steal my neighbor’s bike around 4am (awake because I was thirsty.) When I glimpsed his mask, instead of running to grab my boyfriend for help, I started screaming at him through the window “I CAN SEE YOU! I CAN F***ING SEE YOU, YOU BETTER RUN” with such hulk-like ferocity my throat hurts this morning - the only thing stopping me from grabbing a bat and chasing him was that I was lacking a top. The startled thief made eye contact then bolted out of the gated neighborhood, bikeless, getting a lead on my also topless boyfriend (haha double standard) as he chased him down the street. The most startling part to me… WHY is my response Fight? In every instance that I can recall where there was a given threat, I prepare to fight and am mentally convinced it’s the safest option though I stack up at 4ft 11.5 inches tall, 100lbs and some change. When I was mugged in Barcelona, I chased my mugger 3/4 of a mile down dark alleyways cussing at him until he was cornered in a garaged storefront. Instincts told me not to follow inside as my adrenaline simmered. When what I perceived to be a Yosemite-dwelling-chupacabra 🐐😈👹 at dawn approached a friend and I, I protectively stepped in front of my friend and took a fighting stance with my hiking poles though I was sick and NOT a morning person. It turned out to be 2 deer instead of a creature with more than 4 legs 🤣🤣🤣 Bambi beware! I have many examples of this behavior… So. What are you, fight, flight, or freeze? What are your examples? Is it normal for a female to be fight? Why do we do this? It’s such a curious psychological phenomenon. Ok go in the comments lol ⬇️⬇️
