You might think this city is somewhere in central or Northern Europe, but it is, in fact, in Greece!
Welcome to Kastoria, a historic city filled with Byzantine churches on the shores of Lake Orestiada, in the far north of Greece. Among many interesting sights and facts of the city, including a 7,000 year old settlement discovered on its outskirts, the story locals love to tell is how the peninsula of Kastoria was originally an island.
According to them, at one point a narrow land bridge was filled in to connect Kastoria to the mainland, over 100 years ago, and make it the peninsula it is today. Though not many records of this exist online, history in this part of Greece has not been that well recorded, and locals’ stories usually turn out to be true.
No matter the history, Kastoria gives visitors a glimpse into a completely different side of Greece, so put it in your list for next time you’re in the country!
