Why you should visit Oaxaca:
1) FOOD. Food food food. Oaxaca is known for having one of the best cuisines in Mexico, and is the home of the seven mole sauces. From casual hole in the wall eateries to top of the line restaurants, you will find delicious meals on every corner. Future post with restaurant recs coming soon!
2) Walk through Oaxaca Old Town. The colorful Old Town is very pedestrian-friendly, absolutely gorgeous to walk through, and has lovely squares (head to Zocalo), old cathedrals (Templo de Santo Domingo), plenty of markets, shops, and museums to explore.
3) Taste some Mezcal. The area is known for its agave and mezcal productions as well as its mezcalerias. Taste, sip, and take a tour to the agave fields and distilleries nearby.
4) Explore the gorgeous Botanical Gardens, showcasing the diverse plant life of the region in the city center.
5) Walk through Jalatlaco, a cute neighborhood full of street art and cafes where you can sit and people watch for hours with a delicious coffee or local chocolate drink.
6) Celebrate. It seems like there’s a celebration here every weekend, because even weddings and quinceaneras become city-wide affairs. Come for the Dia de Los Muertos celebration in November, or just stroll around on a weekend to take in all the music, dancing, and other festivities on the streets.
