How little used is Route 66 these days? Well, I can stand in the middle of it and do this while @condoleeza_ figures out my camera. Have you driven on it? Comment below!
••
A lot of towns that sprung up on Route 66 to provide food and lodging to travelers passing through are now semi- or totally abandoned.
••
After the bigger, more well-maintained highway was established running through the US, the meandering, two-lane Route 66 fell out of favor with those making long-haul trips.
••
Even though I understand the inclination to leave this route behind, 66 has a lot to offer you won’t see on the highways. It was built to pass by some pretty cool towns and natural formations, like the Amboy Volcanic Crater. Not to mention that it really does make you feel more a part of the changing US landscape than speeding through on the highway does. #losethemap
