One of the things I love about Greece is that its small towns get even livelier at night, especially in the summer.

In a lot of the world, small town life is considered quieter, idyllic, with most stores closed by late evening. In Greek towns in the summer, midday is actually the “dead” time, when the sun is so scorching that people seek refuge from the heat in their homes or at the beach, or are busy at work.

When the sun sets, the lights come up and people go out en masse to stroll in the warm summer nights and sit at seaside restaurants and bars until morning. Things might be different this year, with many places closing around midnight due to the current situation, but the energy is still there.

For someone like me, for whom too much silence is unnerving, I love this sense of life all around through the night.
