When we travel or move abroad, I think it’s always important to keep in mind how we can have the least negative impact on communities we visit, and also find ways to give back.

San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful city in Mexico, but with almost 40% of its population consisting of mostly American expats (most not officially counted), many local Mexicans have been completely priced out of the city center and their homes, while prices in the city that still seem cheap to tourists have become unaffordable for many locals.

Centro Infantil provides both daycare and preschool education for children from low-income families to help give them a better start in life. The director of the center is amazing, a woman who goes above and beyond to make sure kids have the best school and home lives possible; if their house is not up to par, she connects them with charities that build better housing; if their mom is in an abusive situation, she will help them find women’s shelters; if the kids are malnourished or can’t be taken care of, she tries her best to get them proper food and care.

If you are going to visit San Miguel, you could hardly find a better charity to give back to - follow the link in the bio to donate, and I will include a list of relevant charities in my final blog post.
