A panoramic view of Athens, Greece, showcasing the city's rich history and layers of time. In the foreground stands the ruins of the ancient Athenian Agora, a testament to the city's classical Greek heritage. Nearby, the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus, an ancient Greek temple dedicated to the god of blacksmiths and craftsmen, stands as a striking contrast to the crumbling ruins. Byzantine churches with their distinctive architecture dot the landscape, reflecting the city's Byzantine era. Modern apartment and office buildings rise in the background, a representation of contemporary Athens. The majestic mountains in the distance provide a scenic backdrop, framing the cityscape beautifully. Trees in the foreground add a touch of nature to the urban setting.

There are so many angles in Athens where you can literally see the passage of time laid out before you. @beagreek_athens @discover.greece The ruins of the ancient Athenian Agora in the front, the Temple of Hephaestus (better preserved than the Acropolis but not as well known), Byzantine churches, then modern apartment and office buildings in the background. Everywhere you dig down in Athens, you are digging into ancient layers of the city. In fact, every time construction finds ruins (which is....almost every time) the Central Archaeological Council is called in to determine the importance/preservation priority of the ruins. Sometimes they are incorporated into a display in the building, sometimes the ruins are deemed so important construction can’t continue, but many times the items are removed for preservation and construction goes on. Because in a country like Greece, if you couldn’t build on top of ancient ruins, you probably couldn’t build anywhere. #Greekproblems . . . . #athens #discovergreece #thisisathens #temple #ancient #ancienthistory #history #panorama #greeceis #view #beagreek #gltlove #dametraveler travelstoke
