The WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. I won’t say anything more about yesterday cause there’s nothing to be said you don’t already know.
I will however make a more general point; which is that turning the other way, downplaying the seriousness of issues in our world, and hoping things go away on their own has so far, and will continue to harm us indefinitely.
It’s true for unhinged and rapidly growing conspiracy theories, it’s true for climate change, it’s true for systemic racism, it was true for the handling of this pandemic, and it’s true for a whole wide range of issues.
Yesterday’s events further underline for me that the time to be passive, too busy to know and act, to bury our heads in the sand, to hope things go away on their own, to dismiss problems as “not our own” is long gone. If we want to create a better future, or to be honest, any kind of long-term future at all, we must recognize the real problems we have and undergo a reckoning. If it requires discomfort, sacrifice, and persistence in the face of overwhelming odds, than that is how it has to be. The WWII memorial is especially fitting to remind us that the most important duties we owe to society and to humanity are never easy.
Willful ignorance and dismissal of our very serious issues as a society, as a world, will not help us. Honestly, I don’t even know everything there is to be done, but I know there’s a lot. And we must start by demanding accountability and progress from our representatives, from our loved ones, from ourselves.
And the first order of business is to recognize that our leader’s lies and vitriol are harmful, dangerous to our democracy and our very lives, and immediately remove the dangerous, unstable psychopath fomenting violence and delusion from the top seat of our government. #25thamendment #25thamendmentnow
