Continuing the Greek island theme - a picture of Agios (Saint) Dimitrios in #Syros.
••
Syros is somewhat unique among Greek islands because in a mostly Orthodox country, it has an almost half Catholic population, thanks partly to heavy Venetian influence in its past.
••
Though the church pictured here is Orthodox, plenty of Catholic Churches exist as well. The Italian influence is also visible in a lot of the main town - the local Apollo Theater is a small recreation of La Scala in Milan.
••
Different islands and different parts of Greece show a mix of European and more Middle Eastern influences. Though technically part of Europe, Greek culture has always been at a crossroads thanks to its geographical location. It’s part of what makes the country so unique, and almost every corner of it astoundingly different. For a small country, you have so much to explore...❤️
