Woman Celebrates the Feminist Legacy of the Brooklyn Bridge

Did you know that the Brooklyn Bridge was completed thanks to the dedication of a woman?⠀ ♀️👇⠀ In short, when her husband, who was chief engineer of the project, became bed-ridden, Emily Warren Roebling took over most of his duties -- and impressed everyone with her knowledge and dedication to the project.⠀ 🌉⠀ When the bridge opened in 1883, she was the first to cross in a carriage holding a rooster for good luck.⠀ 🐓⠀ As Abram Stevens Hewitt noted, the Brooklyn Bridge is "...an everlasting monument to the sacrificing devotion of a woman and of her capacity for that higher education from which she has been too long disbarred."⠀ 💪⠀ (Oh, and it just so happens she was very well-traveled, too. I knew I liked her!)⠀ 🌍⠀ Despite the Brooklyn Bridge being touristy, it is one of my favorite places in NYC -- not only because I see it as a feminist icon, but because of the incredible views.⠀ 😍⠀ Bonus: Right now with limited travel, it's not half as crowded as it would usually be. My photo tour guests have been loving it!⠀ 👏⠀ Swipe right to see some of my favorite photo opps from the bridge! 👉 #BeyondTheGuidebook ⠀ ___⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ #nyctravel #nyctraveler #nyctrip #seeyourcity #nycattractions #ILoveNewYorkCity #NYCViews #BeautifulNYC #NYCSkyline #nycskylines #AmazingNYC #NYCGo #NewYorkCityLife #NewYorkCitySkyline ⠀ #BrooklynBridge #brooklynbridgeig #brooklynbridgeview #brooklynbridgewalk #brooklynbridgenyc #manhattanphotographer #queensphotographer #brooklynphotographer #nycphotographer #newyorkphotographer #nyctours #nycthingstodo #newyorktours #newyorktourist #newyorkbridges⠀
