The Woman Behind Brooklyn Bridge
Did you know that the Brooklyn Bridge was completed thanks to the dedication of a woman?
♀️👇
In short, when her husband, who was the chief engineer of the project, became bedridden, Emily Warren Roebling took over most of his duties—and impressed everyone with her knowledge and dedication to the project.

When the bridge opened in May 1883, she was the first to cross in a carriage holding a rooster for good luck.

As Abram Stevens Hewitt noted, the Brooklyn Bridge is "...an everlasting monument to the sacrificing devotion of a woman and of her capacity for that higher education from which she has been too long disbarred."
💪
(Oh, and it just so happens she was very well-traveled, too. I knew I liked her!)
🌍
Despite the Brooklyn Bridge being touristy, it is one of my favorite places in NYC—not only because I see it as a feminist icon, but because of the incredible views.
😍
Tip: As of Jan 1, 2024, vendors are no longer allowed on the bridge, so it feels much less "Disney-fied" than it did in the past.
