Know Your Worth as a Content Creator
KNOW ๐ YOUR ๐ WORTH โ ๐โ
๐โ
So recently I was approached by my first podcast sponsor, who asked for my rates.โ
๐ธโ
Since this was a new kind of project, I had no idea what to pitch. So, I looked up what other people suggested -- and, wow, was it low!โ
๐คโ
I realized there was no way I would be comfortable shouting out a sponsor for the small amount people were suggesting I ask for, especially when I also:โ
โ
โ
have an engaged target audience (which is valuable in itself)โ
โ
โ
create an SEO-optimized "show note" to pair with each episode (which can also rank in Google)โ
โ
โ
send out a dedicated newsletter + social promo of each episode (which is additional exposure)โ
๐ชโ
So, I decided to ignore the advice I received from various sources online and come up with my own rate - one that I thought was fair and also paid the true value of the deliverables.โ
๐ฐโ
Worst case scenario?โ My show would continue as usual and I wouldn't be forced to create content I felt I was being underpaid for.โ
๐คทโโ๏ธโ
Best case scenario?โ I would land a great sponsor and be paid what I was worth.โ
๐ฅโ
In the end, I ended up being paid 12x what those online guides suggested!โ
๐โ
So, why am I sharing this?โ Because I think it's important that in the wild west of blogger rates, you realize that rates are nuanced. Things like engagement rate, having a niche audience, photography/video creation skills, and sharing across digital touchpoints can add value beyond views/listens.โ
๐ธโ
Also, never agree to a rate you feel belittles your talents and offerings. You won't feel good about the work you're creating.โ
๐โ
And if you're truly brand new to blogging and still unsure of what you have to offer, wait to collaborate.โ
๐คโ
Spend time building your audience, growing trust with your community, honing your skills, and gaining confidence in yourself so that you truly know what you can bring to the table when collaborating with a brand.โ
