Thousand Trails Membership Review: Pros and Cons
Thousand Trails Membership, a good deal or not?
This is probably the most talked about membership out there in the fulltiming community. Some love it and some hate it. Last winter we explored Florida and stayed at 3 TT resorts to check it out and paid WAY too much money per night (that is a lessons learned for another time).
There are a ton of options with TT and we opted to purchase a used Elite Basic membership and added on the Trails Collection to have access to all of the parks. We can stay 21 days at a location, move between parks, and book out 120 days in advance. We paid just under $5k for the membership, transfer fee, and yearly dues.
Pro's:
◾ Many parks along the outskirt of the US (Coasts, Texas, and a few sprinkled in the middle)
◾ Very family friendly resorts
◾ Pretty easy to book online
◾ Nice to stay up to 3 weeks at a time
Con's
◾ Most campgrounds are tight and some are not well maintained
◾ Age Restricted Resorts in AZ and TX (therefore, we don't actually have access to all the resorts)
◾ Took 3 months to be able to start using the membership since we bought used
◾ Pay extra per night for 50 amp spot
We calculated that if we average $45/night at a typical camping resort, we would need to stay 112 nights to pay for the membership. As a fulltime family, that is very easy to accomplish. The yearly dues are~$500 so again, breaking it down per night we would need to stay 12 nights/year to pay for itself.
There are other cheaper options that include purchasing a Zone Pass for $615/year. If you want to join TT, I have a great TT rep that can help with any questions and/or sign you up. Also, if you are interested in a used membership I can pass along the company we used. **Be aware that it takes 2-3 months to be able to use a used membership, so plan accordingly**
Overall, while the initial sticker shock was there, the way we travel and where we are traveling the TT membership has it's benefits and we have enjoyed the 7 parks we've stayed at.
