Homeschooling Year 3: New Approach
Officially started our 3rd year of homeschooling
I finally feel I have a good grip on what works for us. This year we are mixing up what we are doing and are trying some unschooling. At the end of last year we were all very tired and felt constricted with what we were doing.
See below for our breakout of topics and what we are doing:
◾Bible - Monthly studies that are bible focused. We started with My Brother's Keeper from @notconsumed
◾History - Using a mixture of online, books, videos, and museums to cover World History from Roman Empire to current events
◾Math - J is using Kahn Academy and A is using Saxon.
◾Language Arts - Using a mixture of WordlyWise, Grow with Grammar, Sonlight, and A Reason for Handwriting (for cursive). J plans to master cursive this year and A is continuing to learn cursive.
◾Science - we are using @apologiaworld again and are studying Human Anatomy and Physiology.
◾Spanish - using @hsaonline to learn Spanish
◾Music - A wants to learn how to play the piano, so we are in the market to find an online solution that works with us traveling
◾Extras - J is really interested in blacksmithing and forging. We have been watching shows about it and are planning to visit as many blacksmiths as possible this year.
I created a spreadsheet with all the task that need to be done in the week and print it out for each kid. This way they know how much work needs to be completed and the kids are in control to when it happens.
Also, we are doing a 6/1 schedule to help break it into chunks and take breaks. We will have school for 6 weeks (5 days a week) and take 1 week off.
So far the new layout and approach has proven to be beneficial. The kids like knowing what needs to be done and I like not feeling overwhelmed with so much curriculum.
What questions do you have for me about homeschooling?
